DAF Dealers pick-up top honours at Commercial Motor Awards

  • Ford & Slater and Brian Currie both scoop top awards
  • Apprentice of the Year and Dealer Principal of the Year won respectively
  • Imperial Commercials highly commended in Forecourt category
  • Awards recognises industry’s best is truck sales, aftersales and support services

DAF Dealers Ford & Slater headquartered in Leicester and Brian Currie in Milton Keynes have emerged victorious at 2018 Commercial Motor Awards. They were among 16 award winners last week at the Vox Centre, Birmingham, at the prestigious gala awards evening which recognised the truck industry’s very best sales, aftersales and support service providers.

Imperial Commercials in Halesowen was highly commended in the Forecourt / Showroom of the Year category.

Ford & Slater’s Sonny Meijer picked up the Apprentice of the Year award, having excelled over the past three years as a DAF Technician Apprentice at the Dealer’s King’s Lynn location. He is also Chairman for the Ford & Slater Apprentice Panel – an apprentice-led council representing Ford & Slater’s 10 locations across Central and Eastern England, offering trainees the opportunity to have their say on issues affecting the company and the scheme.

Sonny has helped to raise almost £5,000 for charity and has been involved in the promotion and recruitment for Ford & Slater’s apprenticeships programme, itself picking-up Apprenticeship of the Year at the MT Awards in July. He was hand-chosen by DAF Trucks to act as apprentice valedictorian for the official DAF Trucks 2018 graduation event.

Brian Currie is a name synonymous with the DAF brand in Milton Keynes and the wider region DAF operation in Milton Keynes with Brian Currie himself presiding over a highly successful operation since the 1970s. The company today also has service centres in Northampton and Bedford, plus a TRP Shop – the all-makes truck and trailer brand – in Irthlingborough. Brian, now Chairman, was awarded Dealer Principal of the Year.

“This award,” he said, “is in recognition of much more than just one individual. My wife, Pat, my family and a hugely dedicated, long-serving team of professionals have contributed to the success of Brian Currie. It’s a simple recipe; hard work and dedication, but to have delivered such a high level of service to our customers for 40-years is testament to the calibre of individual we have in our team. Although this is a personal award,” he said, “I am immensely proud of the team effort that underpins it.”

HeavyTorque White Logo

It is with regret, that the HeavyTorque team have decided to take a stand based on an industry-wide ‘blind eye’ to the waste in the magazine and periodicals business.

HeavyTorque (#15, July 2018) was the final issue to grace the shop shelves, both on the High Street and across the travel network. As part of our onward strategy to adapt, HeavyTorque will now be distributed exclusively through controlled circulation and available through printed subscription.

Please note, this change will only affect newsstand purchasers. There will be no change for our loyal print subscribers.

Why the newsstand change? Quite simply, we can no longer (in good conscience) participate in a distribution programme that creates such an inherent waste of our precious natural resources – and money.

For those of you who have enjoyed HeavyTorque from the newsstand, we sincerely appreciate your business – and we would hope that you’ve enjoyed the magazine enough to consider a direct subscription?

Single Issues

If you prefer to purchase individual issues (one at a time), you will still have the ability to do so, both online (via the website), or by calling our offices +44 (0) 1572 3450872. Orders for single issues received before the pre-publication deadline will be mailed along with the subscribers.
