BRIDGE PARTS TAKE TO THE AIR
German haulier Bohnet GmbH used two semi low-loaders, one six-, the other seven-axle, each pulled by new MAN TGX XXL tractor units, to carry two 45-tonnne bridge expansion joints 30 kilometers to the Franz-Josef-Strauss airport, near Munich. The 11m-long, 6.22m-wide,1.3m-high units were taken under police escort to be loaded onto an Antonov AN-124 Ruslan, one of the world’s largest air freighters. It took eight hours to load the joints through the nose of the plane using a ramp, mobile crane and winch. The next day the Antonov took off for Mary, Turkmenistan via a refueling stop in Turkmenbashi. The 1,600-metre bridge, which crosses the river Amu Darya, forms part of the highway connecting the towns of Türkmenabat and Farap.
