RUNNING GEAR

FORGET ADIDAS OR NIKE. IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT’S IMPORTANT. ESPECIALLY ON TRAILERS. MARGO COLE EXPLAINS

A close look at the running gear of almost any heavy duty trailer is likely to reveal an axle or suspension system manufactured by German transport products specialist BPW. The firm, based in Wiehl, 50km east of Cologne, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of intelligent running gear systems for trailers and semi-trailers. Supplying around 420,000 axles a year, with a foothold in over 30 countries, it numbers all the main manufacturers of heavy haulage vehicles as customers.

BPW – originally known as Bergische Patentachsenfabrik Wiehl – began developing and producing running gear systems and trailer-axles in 1898. Its commitment to the heavy goods sector can be traced back to the development of the roller-bearing axle in the 1920s, in co-operation with German bearings manufacturer SKF-Norma.
